Welcome to the small little community of Wingate Indiana. Formally called Pleasant Hill, Wingate is a town in coal Creek Township and Monterey County and home to less than 500 residents. Originally platted back in 1832, citizens renamed the town to Wingate in honor of the prominent town person John C Wingate.
Wingate is known for its sports heritage and signage on the north and south ends of town along state Route 25 state that the Wingate basketball team was the first to win back to back championships in 1913 and 1914. Wingate also has produced for Indiana basketball Hall of Fame inductees, Jesse Wood, Lee Thorn, Alonzo Goldsberry, and Homer Stonebraker. Wingate was also the side of the first electric basketball scoreboard invented in 1935. While small, Wingate certainly holds onto its claims to fame.
Wingate is served by the North Montgomery School Corporation and elementary students are zoned to Pleasant Hill elementary school, and middle and high school students attend Northridge middle school and North Montgomery high school.
Wingate is known for its affordable housing with a median home value of just $65,000. 75% of residents own their own homes but the rent is just about $710 on average, making it a very affordable place to call home. The median household income is about $45,000.
Downtown Chicago is about 2 1/2 hours north but the closest largest town is Lafayette, just 30 minutes north east of downtown Wingate. You'll find shops, restaurants, markets, and more in Lafayette but the town does have a couple of restaurants, gas stations, the Midtown Museum of Native Cultures and a small market.
