Valparaiso Indiana is the county seat of Porter County and home to about 35,000 residents. Dating back to 1836 when the first settlers and commissioners were appointed to locate a site for the county seat, Valparaiso was divided from the town of Portersville. During the battle of Valparaiso, Capt. David Porter suffered defeat at the hands of two British warships within the Valparaiso Harbor and in 1837, the town was renamed Valparaiso, which means Vale of Paradise. Today, Valparaiso is located 50 miles east of Chicago with a wide range of amenities, the Valparaiso University, which is a top rated university throughout the Midwest, and the Valparaiso Community School System is rated one of the best as well. The city offers competitive outpatient healthcare clinics, local parks, community and senior programs, and several companies, restaurants, shops, and markets. Valparaiso is considered a "pro-business" community.
The Valparaiso school system offers eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. It also includes the Porter County Career and Technical Center and several private schools. It has its own library, which is a branch of the Porter County Public Library system.
Valparaiso is a wonderful place to explore, live, and play. We have the Chicago street theater, the Memorial Opera House, and the Valparaiso Theatrical Company. Valparaiso also boasts the Brauer Museum of Art, the Museum of Firefighting, and the Porter County Museum.
Valparaiso has dozens of parks with an extensive park district and many more parks currently in development. Whether it's a playground, sports fields, gardens, bike trails, or golf, there is never a lack of outdoor entertainment throughout the city.
We have two major festivals each year, the Popcorn Festival, and the Porter County fair. Our popcorn Festival honors Orville Redenbacher, a former Valparaiso resident who built his popcorn factory here. There are racing events, balloon launch, and carnival attractions each year.
