Sauk Village Indiana, also known as "The Village", is a small south suburban Cook County with a small portion in Will County and home to about 11,000 residents. This suburban and rural mix offers a wide range of home styles and designs with about 50% of the residents owning their own homes. The median home value is about $75,000 with the median rent of about 1100.
It's interesting to know that Sauk Village has actually been a center of activity for hundreds of years as it was an area of high ground surrounding Lake Michigan. Native Americans use this area for transporting herd animals and trade items. It opened to American settlers in 1838 and when the Calumet Expressway was built in the late 1950s, this area opened up to prime real estate development.
Sauk Village expanding during the 1980s with the addition of more homes to the St. James Estates area and new subdivisions such as Carlisle Estates and Southbrook. The community center behind the old village hall opened in 1982 and construction began on the Sauk Pointe Industrial Park west of the Calumet Expressway.
The 1990s saw even more growth and expansion and in 2007, the Sauk Village Municipal Center and Senior Citizen Center was developed coinciding with the village's 50th-anniversary celebrations. It continues to be billed out and expanded each decade and is one of the more affordable places to live in Northwest Indiana. [Image by Wiszo8]
Schools in Sauk Village are included in its own school district part of the larger Bloom Township high school District 206. Residents are assigned to the Strasburg, Wagoner, and Rickover for grades kindergarten through eighth and the Bloom Trail high school for grades 9 through 12.
There are a few restaurants and markets in this small village including the delicious Sharks Fish & Chicken, American restaurant, and Zio D's Pizza. At the intersection of Sauk Trail and Torrance Avenue, you'll find several restaurants, markets, Walgreens, and amenities.
