Highland Indiana is located in Lake County just southeast of Chicago and home to about 24,000 residents. It was originally incorporated back in 1910 and is a part of the Chicago metro area and North Township. It's bordered by Hammond to the north, Münster to the west, Schererville to the south and Griffith to the east.
Highland has several neighborhoods and subdivisions including Arbor Hill, Brentwood, Ellendale, Golfmoore, Highland Ter., Estates, Homestead, Hooks, Lakeside, Meadows, Petit Park, Sandalwood, South Ridge, Wicker Highlands, White Oak Estates, Wicker Park Estates, and Wicker Park Manor also known as Frog Hollow. The School Town of Highland is the public school system and operates the Highland high school, the middle school, and four elementary schools including Allen J Warren, Southridge, Mildred Merkley, and Judith Morton Johnston elementary school. Highland also has three private schools including the Highland Christian School, Our Lady of Grace School, and a Bible Baptist school located on the former Orchard Elementary school site. There are about 3200 students in the school district for grades kindergarten through 12th and the Judith Morton Johnston elementary school receives a 8 out of 10 by great schools.org.
There are multiple parks throughout Highland including dog parks, playgrounds, the Lincoln community center, the Sharp Athletic Complex, and the 4 mile Erie Lackawanna Trail. Highland is home to the Hoosier Prairie State Nature Preserve, and over 1500 acre wetland habitat part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The main square part gazebo is a popular location for parties and wedding ceremonies as well as community events and festivals.
