DeMotte Indiana is a small community in Keener Township and Jasper County and home to just under 4000 residents. This small town is located along Highway 231 and Borders Kearsey and Forest City, about an hour southeast of Chicago.
Located in the northern part of Jasper County, this is a thriving rural community is rich with history and was named after the Civil War veteran Mark DeMotte who served as the first Lieut. with the Indiana Light Artillery. He founded and was the first Dean of the Valparaiso University School of Law.
Although this town is small, there's a variety of shops and great dining options such as the Yesteryear's Meats and Specialty Shoppe, one of Demotte's most popular stores. But that's not the only claim to fame. DeMotte has some great restaurants, beautiful countryside and a quieter way of life that appeals to our residents.
DeMotte is also home to a few festivals and events each year like the Touch of Dutch, which is a celebration of the Dutch American heritage in the area. Many businesses have vendor tents set up throughout the downtown as well as restaurants, music, and activities. In addition, Cedarpalooza is a fun event each year celebrating musical acts and showcasing an area favorite Vicious Citrus.
With several parks, specifically a favorite known as the Field of Dreams, DeMotte offers a wealth of recreation and social events as well as programs and sporting events each year.
The Kankakee Valley School Corporation serves DeMotte but there is the DeMotte elementary school located in town. Middle school students are served by the Kankakee Valley intermediate school and the Kankakee Valley middle school and high school in Wheatfield Township. There are a couple of private schools as well including the Covenant Christian high school and the DeMotte Christian school.
Homes start at about $120,000 up to approximately $400,000 with the average home price coming in around $290,000.
